The restoration of Michigan Central Station – an iconic but long-abandoned building in Detroit, Michigan – transformed what was once a key component of a bygone transportation system. A team led by architects Quinn Evans repurposed the old station into a “mobility hub for the future” at the behest of Ford Motor Company.

As a key partner of the exterior restoration, expert craftsmen from CASS Sheet Metal recreated a historically accurate copper batten-seam roof and improved the building’s valley, gutter and drainage systems. Special attention and intense coordination with the Quinn Evans architectural team helped to solve issues with weathertightness and thermal movement that had affected the building prior to this project.

The newly reimagined space will allow Ford researchers and others to develop far-reaching new technologies like autonomous drones and innovative road surfaces that can charge electric vehicles while on the move.
